Rev. Dr. Joseph Drikskill.png

DSF is deeply saddened to share the news of Rev. Dr. Joseph D. Driskill’s passing. Dr. Driskill was Dean Emeritus for DSF in Berkeley and served as Professor Emeritus of Christian Spirituality at Pacific School of Religion. He was a gracious and generous teacher, passionate justice activist, insightful contemplative scholar, and a gentle but courageous minister. With humor and compassion, he shepherded scores of DSF students inside and outside of the classroom from 1993 until his retirement in 2011. His students were challenged by his adamant claim that the work of spirituality and the work for justice are woven together. The legacy of his gentle wisdom, deep faith, and abiding commitment to justice boldly lives on in the lives of his students and the far-reaching communities that continue to be shaped by his presence.

Dr. Driskill led students in exploring Protestant spiritualities, contemplative prayer, Disciples history, and the role of spirituality in pastoral care. He was ordained by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kentucky in 1971, and he pastored churches in Missouri, Kentucky, and Saskatchewan, and spent 12 years in campus ministry at the University of Western Ontario, serving the United Church of Canada in London, Ontario. He was a dedicated scholar and studied at Culver-Stockton College, Vanderbilt University, the University of Regina, and the Graduate Theological Union. A widely respected author, his writings, including Protestant Spiritual Exercises: Theology, History, and Practice, continue to shape the field of spirituality, ethics, and pastoral care. Most recently in 2024, he published A Remarkable Life: The Journey of Alice Porter Medical Missionary, reflecting his continued passion for lifting up lives of courage and service shaped by faith.

“Joe was truly a gentle soul and fierce advocate for justice,” says DSF Executive Director Christy Newton. “With a twinkling sense of humor and an incredible generosity of spirit, he challenged all his students to live fully into their calling. From day one, Joe was a trusted mentor, and I am indebted to his insight, encouragement, and faithful leadership. I am beyond grateful to Joe. He was a luminary to me and so many others.”

Dr. Driskill leaves behind his wife Leslie Bryant. Our prayers are with her and all those who feel this deep loss.

We invite you to join us in honoring Joe’s life and legacy by sharing your memories, stories, or reflections on this page. Your words will help celebrate the impact he made on so many and offer comfort to his loved ones and the DSF community.

Joe had a gift for seeing the sacred in everyday life. I will never forget the quiet way he listened—really listened—when you spoke, making you feel that your words mattered. His classes not only deepened my understanding of spirituality, but also taught me that justice work is an expression of faith. I carry his wisdom into my ministry every day, and I am so grateful for the time I had to learn from him.
